Humidifiers for a Baby's Room: Safety, Placement and Cleaning

A humidifier can ease dry winter air in a nursery. Safety comes down to type, placement and cleaning.

The short answer

Use a cool-mist humidifier, out of reach, a few feet from the crib, set to keep the room around 40 to 50 percent, and clean it daily and weekly.

Type

Cool-mist humidifiers (evaporative or ultrasonic) avoid the burn risk of hot water and steam. Ultrasonic units are quietest; use distilled water to avoid white dust.

Placement

  • At least a few feet from the crib, on a stable surface, with the cord secured and out of reach.
  • Mist directed away from bedding and walls.
  • A hygrometer in the room to keep below 50 percent.

Cleaning

Empty and rinse daily and descale weekly; stagnant water can grow bacteria.

SafetyNever add essential oils or medications to a humidifier unless its maker says it's designed for them, and follow safe-sleep guidance for the crib itself.
