Humidifiers for Houseplants: How Much Humidity Plants Need

Many popular houseplants come from humid tropics and struggle in dry winter air. A small humidifier near the plants is the simplest fix.

The short answer

Most tropical houseplants are happiest around 50 to 60 percent humidity. Group them and run a cool-mist humidifier nearby, measuring with a hygrometer so the rest of the room stays below about 55 percent.

How much plants need

Typical humidity preferences
PlantsComfortable range
Cacti and succulentsDry air is fine (30-40%)
Pothos, snake plant, ZZTolerant (35-50%)
Calathea, ferns, fiddle-leaf fig, orchidsHumid (50-60%+)

Setup

  • Group humidity-loving plants together; their leaves raise local humidity.
  • Run a cool-mist humidifier a few feet away, not aimed directly at leaves.
  • Use distilled water in ultrasonic units to avoid mineral spots on leaves.
  • Keep good airflow to prevent fungal problems.
